More’n a few times
we challenged each other
via the written word.
These times were among
the best times of my life.
We took turns
choosin’ the subject.
One of us’d write first
The other’d write in response.
On one such occasion,
with John Hiatt playin’ in the background,
I threw out the title
“It Feels Like Rain.”
The Ace of Spades
pulled out his notebook . . .
and a pen . . .
and begin to write
for me.
“Feelin’ like rain
and doing something
about it
are two different things
one of us
doesn’t appear
any smarter than the other,
but one of us
has to run get the slickers
The other the rubbers.”
With a wickedly adorable smile in his eyes
he handed me the paper.
He’d left plenty of room for me to write
for him.
I responded
“Who’s gonna be the first to
get the slickers
or the rubbers?
fear convinces us of the need
for protective gear.
I say,
forget the rubbers,
It’s too late
for a slicker…
I’m already wet.”
Ten years have gone
he stayed here
I went there
I’ll have that scrap of paper until
I pass on to the ‘nother places.
And boy,
I sure do miss
The Ace of Spades

you are blessed with a huge spirit and timeless writing , thank you
@Leslie ~ If you did not too possess a huge spirit, we would not recognize it in each other. Thank you for hearing me . . . that is the blessing. ~G
love the song too!
I really love this – great narrative voice – both yearnful yet playful. Lovely.
I recently spent a considerable amount of time reading your output. Your praise is taken as a high compliment. Thank you for taking the time to hear. ~G
I like this. And, too, it reminds me somehow of Bob Weir’s “Looks Like Rain” on his album ACE – another juxtaposition of aces and rain!
Aces and Rain abound. (Ha) How clever of you to pick up on the relation.
Thanks for taking some time to read and to chat.
